The National Council of Teachers of English Celebrates Spirited Inquiry at Balitmore

Nationally acclaimed authors and educators concludes 109th annual meeting inclusively

The National Council of Teachers of English has announced an incredible array of headliners for Spirited Inquiry, their Annual Convention in Baltimore, Maryland. The event from November 21-24, 2019, will draw 7,000+ literacy educators from across the country and will feature more than 600 concurrent sessions. Authors Laurie Halse AndersonRenee Watson, and Ibi Zoboi will contribute to the formal lunch through their words. Overall, more than 250 authors will speak at various sessions, workshops, and events. Emily Kirkpatrick, Executive Director said, “NCTE’s Convention is the most historic annual literacy convening for teachers and educators. In this, the 109th meeting, our speaker lineup celebrates the strong relationship between authors and educators that is a hallmark of the event.” The annual convention with words “Because Wisdom Begins with Wonder” encouraging authors and teachers across the nation to participate in the event. The 109th meeting will draw teachers, school leaders, and literacy professionals from preK through college and will offer one of the nation’s largest forums for professional development, research, and literacy leadership. Program Chair and NCTE President-Elect, Leah Zuidema selected this year’s Spirited Inquiry theme and said “This Convention was planned to help teachers rekindle their passion for literacy education. It’s a place to discover new ideas and rediscover the heart of teaching. That happens as much with our celebrated speakers as it does with our incredible attendees”. Speakers announced for 2019 include:
  • Renowned historian, literary scholar, and cultural critic Henry Louis Gates Jr. and award-winning author Tonya Bolden, coauthors of Dark Sky Rising: Reconstruction and the Dawn of Jim Crow
  • 2019 Newbery Medal–winning author Meg Medina
  • Tommy Orange, author of There There
  • Tara Westover, author of Educated: A Memoir
